Hello and Welcome from the yard! How's it going for you all ? How in their imagination would have thought that Chrysler would be fililng chapter 11. Where is Ole' Lee I. when you need him. I just listened to a man from consumer Reports on FOX NOT reccomend buying any chrysler on the market- ooooo I think that was a tough thing to say. They said that their records did not indicate any model worthy of buying in their standards. Is that fact or opinion and is that does that guy have a job after that aired! Now I am just listening to the President and they are announcing that the deal with FIAT may be going through again. Wow.
Also last week it was announced that GM would be phasing out and basically junking their PMD or Pontiac Division. what happened to that love of Smokey and the Bandit? What happened with the auto industry? It used to be that everyone was so thrilled to see the new models when they came out. What changes, what new options? that new car smell? Well the new car smell over the years seemed to be replaced by the same ole' same ole'. To me, It seems that there hasn't been too many exciting models every since fuel guidelines and our cars seemed to be just transportation and not much of a statement. It also came as a downfall, when you had to finance your car along with your house! the new car smell just turned to a stink. yes there are some highlights that have come out of the big 3, to me, Corvette, the new Camaro, Challenger revive, The rebirth of the Mustang, Cadillac has some exciting models, but have the public lost their love affair with the new models when they go on the lot? Are they just the same old girls lining the lots to choose from, somewhat like Spec Houses.
The Automobile changed history. When that first machine was derived to compete against the horse, people thought they were crazy. that simple machine changed our economy, values, and how we do business. Engines, Speed, ease of movement of people and goods, the interstate system. War. The automobile made it possible for us to travel, do business all over the country, and it even crept into our morals. The backseat of the car single handed changed the values of America. it gave freedom. you know didn't have to sneak in the barn to experience love, you could just pull over on the side of the road or back by the popnd, in privacy of your own car. I know my Gramma Johnson talked about that. parking, hey, I liked that and I know occasionally my husband and I still like to take the Boones Farm and take a park. The style of the vehicles and the build of them also tell a history. The 1957 Chevrolet fins, those Finned chrysler cars, body lines, and also the motors! 327, 455, 396, my personal favorite along with the Ford 427, and POWER. Racing legends, Racing history and the battle to have the best car and sales. Salesman didn't have that creepy feeling, they were respected and it was an exciting time. now when you buy a car, it's like going to the Dentist! that wheeling dealing isn't just not there. And War, look at how the country came together and mandated to support the WWII effort from 1942-1946. NO Cars, everyone was behind the effort. Lincoln built engines for planes, and everyone pitched in. it also changed the Steel industry. Truely History. I think of that everytime I look at an old car, History. Even the new cars, are they creating history, will they be remembered? Are they collectible. I don't think anyone is going to collect a Taurus, do you? Since when did a car simply become transportation?
There is so much history that come along with the automotive industry and now, it appears to become a casualty of the Staus Quoe and just "a business". Did Greed kill our auto industry. I feel to think so. Also the lack of luster of the new models. Also Imports. I am all good and willing for free trade, but there is something to say about "Buying American" or is that going away also. Did we not produce anything that competed or stuck out in the line up? used to be a new Chevrolet or Cadillac was the thing or symbol of your standing in society, but now it's a Mercedes, BMW, or other model Nothing wrong with them, but we need to support ourselves to succeed. Today is a sad Day. I'm so encouraged that Ford is trying to restructure and NOT take Government money. Bully for them! I don't think the Government should be bigger- but smaller, and SHOULD NOT dictake Free Enterprise. It's pretty scarry when they are now in the Banks, Mortgage markets, Insurance, and now auto. that's a big market. it effects alot of areas and pours over into many other areas of the businesses. think of all those Subcontractors for the auto industry. What happened. Greed, that's my opinion.
Now this market has also spilled over into the iron market. it will come back, but will take a bit. when no one is building, then no one is selling scrap. Scrap is as low as back in 2003. I was told by a source that there are no buyers for the product right now. China was a big buyer, but they also are seeing some effects of the banking adjust. Housing downfall, correction. hey, money was easy and we were over spending our market. People were getting into homes that were not feesable and they started to default and so the wall comes crumbling down. When your assests fall about, that's your basis and effects the chances of lending out money. We did need a correction, easy money, and extended credit.
What is this going to do to our hobby,. I do know that we need to educate the young people about the auto history and get them interested in the hobby. Go out to the shed and hug your car today and be thankful that it was from a time when Design, Standards, and Power meant something. I do believe that this will increase some lines or values of cars, and on the other side, parts may be somewhat hard to find. anyway, it's another change in our time. I'm proud to have grown up with a collector and in the auto area and also farming and learned to work-hard. As much as I hate to say it, I'm glad that dad made me wax that wrecked car 10 times till it was good enough, clean out the Free Stall barn in below zero weather , fix fence, and do field work, even though he tricked me into the "getting a tan" theory. Chasing, cows, throwing hundreds of bales, I loved every minute of it and was handed anything. Work Ethic- we need to revive it back, Pride, also. what is important, Faith, Family, and good friends.
Well enough on my little venting, I'm off to Sioux Falls to take pictures and do inventory on the Marshall Guthrie Auction. 24 K MAc Tools, 50 plus Montes 1978-87, Corvettes, and much more! June 13th- you won't want to miss this. We will have auctions on-line it will be www.proxibid.com/vanderbrink. Check it out. We will be loading these sales as they are inventoried. The Besser Collection is absolutely fabulous and you need to mark 7-25-09 down, heck, you need to mark all our dates down. See you at the Auction and HUg Your Car today!
